The construction of the church dates back to 1568-69, with the Capuchin friars taking up residence in 1570. The convent and the church were subjected to the Napoleonic suppression between the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries and in 1867 were abandoned by the religious community and deconsecrated. The church became the property of the Municipality of Argenta, which used it as a civil hospital until 1939. After the bombing, it was used as a shelter for poor families, and suffered progressive and unstoppable deterioration. In 1985 the Municipal Administration provided for its restoration and in 1987 it became home to the Municipal Library and the Cultural Centre.
